Procrastination and insanity

According to Albert Einstein, insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. You have some work that needs to be done but you delay it for a day by telling yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow” and when tomorrow comes you tell yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow” and this keeps on going and every day you tell yourself the same thing and nothing gets done. Is this not insanity? You are doing the same thing over and over and expect to one day “just do it”. Eventually something changes. Your boss threatens to fire you, your exam date is approaching, you start having chest pains, you are about to become homeless, whatever it is, something changes, and all of a sudden you start to prepare for your exam, write that report you were delaying and decide to become healthier. But guess what? It’s usually too late at that point.

What you need to realize is that nothing will be done until something changes. Stop lying to yourself by telling yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow” because you keep on doing it over and over again and nothing gets done. This is an insane thing to do. You are not going to do it tomorrow and you are not going to do it the day after that. You are not going to do it until something changes. You can either wait for those changes to eventually take place or you can take control and start doing things differently. Whatever you decide to do, be honest to yourself and realize that you are NOT going to do it tomorrow until something changes and doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results is insanity.
